Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

For example when you go to a job interveiw is it unappropriate to wear your natural hair if it is an afro?

OK, I'm whitewhitewhite, and it has never made sense to me that black women try so hard to look white. It doesn't impress anyone. I still know they're black, but it seems like they are ashamed of it. I mean, they have their own natural beauty. Changing your looks drastically seems like a sell-out. I think blond or red hair or blue or green eyes on people of color just looks out of place. Yes, people notice it, but it somehow seems wrong. If I was hiring, I would be more likely to hire someone who seemed secure in themselves than someone who was trying to be someone they aren't. I would draw the conclusion that they are a fake person, and perhaps untrustworthy. Those are my thoughts on it, anyway.

I don't see why we have 2 straighten our hair, only because it looks "white".White people R inspired by us. They dress like us, act like us, I've seen plenty of white people with cornrows. I know plenty of white girls who dye their hair every 2 weeks, and that's not changing? mmmmhhh. Report It

Maybe we just like the way it looks! The only reason why I straighten my hair is because I like long hair and if I leave it in an afro, it looks really short, like I barely have any hair. Report It

Only change what you want to change.

I don't think they should relax their hair just to fit in.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

Wear it however you want (afro is okay) as long as it is well groomed and cared for, like any other hair do.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

More important, they should decide whether they are African or American.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

Only do what you want. Don't let someone else tell you what you should do.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

You mean inappropriate. An no i don't think she should change her hair texture to fit in with mainstream. But you can do other things like braids. But if you want the job, probably straighten it out with a press or something.. jsut so you know that the job wasn't offered to you because of your hair. But then again you're already profiled.. you're black

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

absolutely not!! i 'm mixed, and have african american rooots and then the top layer of my hair is white...african american hair holds onto styles easier, like when you curl it or whatever, and it's more unique...keep it

and afros are just plain awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

I don't think so. Of course, I don't think one of those really high afro's from the seventy's would be appropriate for a job interview. But, I African American hair does have a different texture and different style. I don't think you should have to change yourself in order to be accepted in the work place. Ultimately, I hope they are interviewing you for your job skills not your appearance.

Jheri Curl it. That's mainstream! Nah, but seious, do what you want as long as its not dreads.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

there are hair styles that fit all textures. example, afro hairs seem to take braids better than non afro hair. or straight hair swept straight back is just better for straight hair. if you want to see an afro texture hair sweep back, imagine don king.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

No we should not change our hairstyle to fit in we are who we are and we don't change it just to fit in. For example: like you said for a job interview however you have your hair it doesn't matter if the job interviewing people have a problem than they can kiss my black a** and you don'y have to work for them.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

H*ll no, they should be who they are and live their lives.

if America (and the rest of the world) can't figure out that people are people and the differences between us are what makes this world an interesting place to live, there isn't any bloody hope that this world will survive. Come on people, if we were all cookie cutter identical where would there be ANYTHING interesting in people? (and the differences are actually pretty d*mned small overall- whether people want to admit it or not most people are pretty much the same- they just want to be accepted and loved for who they are).

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

you should never change anything to fit in the mainstream.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

you usually don;t have to go outta your to look like everyone else if it's all natural flaunt it but if you really want to change it and look like everyone else here in america. But at the same time if it's for an interview you might wanna consider changing it jus for a short while. it'll give you more of a chance at gettin the job you want

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

I think you should keep it natural as long as its neat and clean. You shouldnt be ashamed of your back ground or do things to fit in like that. People should except you for who you are! People need to realize African American people dont have straight hair lol and should except that.If these people dont hire you cause you have an afro or let your hair be natural its racsism to me ,you cant help the way your hair is. People just need to deal, be proud of who you are and play on that natural beauty girl. Go natural its who you are they need to just deal.Hope this helps even tho I'm white:)

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

definetly not, especially if you don't feel comfortable in your new look. You can always tell when a person is not sure of themselves, they are always fidgeting and fixing their hair, or tugging their clothes (I am a constant fidgeter...is that a word..lol) I think that when you feel comfortable with yourself, your personality will shine through, and for your example, if a company does not want to hire something because of their hair, they can go to hell.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

I think so...I mean, Im not saying change it completely and definately dont change it to fit in, but an afro? If it was styled, like with some braids in the front thats appropiate to me, but just an out there afro, I dont think it is. BUT I dont think we need to change our hair to fit in w/ the rest of America. Our hair, is what makes us unique.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

no, its your hair and if thats how it is, dont change it to fit in.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

only what they personally want to change, no one shold ever feel forced to!

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

how are they going to change there hair

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

Definitely don't change it, it is who you are and part of your heritage. Don't go mainstream.

Should African American women change their hair texture to fit in with mainstream America?

only if it helpd u manage it better! my hair has a life of its own. so i usually plait it or relax it. i think dreads are good if u can keep them nice, clean n tidy and not too thick. but people have very mixed opinions bout them. an afro, so long as it aint massive, is fine.
