African american hair tend to be coarse and resistant so it might not take a lighter color very well if at all. I will recommend that you see a hairstylist .He might have to lighten your hair and then deposit the desired color or use a highlift color to achieve the result that you want .It all depends on your hair condition and the level of the color that you want to achieve.Talk to your hairstylist.

Ok, I need more details, what color are you trying, what brand are you using, it could be a number of things causing the color not to take. Are you trying to go lighter? If your hair is black, you will need to lighten it up first. I would also suggest you go to a professional, doing it yourself can cause damage to your hair.
