As an african-american woman, what is the best way to grow my hair?

I have thin hair in the front but long hair that breaks often. What styles can wear that gives my hair a break? I have just been flat ironing a shoulder lenghth bob with a part or pulled into a loose ponytail.

first off, try using the iron on a lower heat, and one with a comb, it will help get it straighter with less heat. also, if you use grease, stop using that. the thick vaseline texture of it and even the thinner ones will make a comb pull at you hair and break it just as easily, use oil, like super 8 wonder oil. its much much much thinner then grease and allows your hair to move more. as for styles, wearing a ponytail is good, but stay away from rubber bands and such, they will break your hair, i cant stress that enough. use a ponytail holder that is completly covered with a cloth type material. it will slide and come off much easier. also when wearing a ponytail, i suggest you stay away from the gels that get hard after drying, they can also contribute to breaking hair. use gel that has a low hold. spritz and other hair sprays will also break your hair and dry it out badly, so unless you absolutly need a strong hold for a style i suggest you stay away from those. wearing your hair in braid is also a good style to give hair a break and also to prevent further breakage, but make sure they arent done too tightly, or theyll contribute to breakage also. When you sleep, wrap your hair ( not nessecarily with wrapping lotion) and cover it with a silk scarf and sleep on silk pillowcases. they will keep your head cool and move easily over the hair to prevent breaking while sleeping. If you use chemicals on your hair a pH balanced shampoo and conditioner is crucial. Something I recommend using is a cholesterol shampoo and conditioner set. the cholesterol will do wonder for making your hair much softer. those are just some basic things you can do and theres a lot more you can do for longer fuller more managable hair. of course it will always help to go to someone in person so they can see the exact conditon of the hair, but go to someone if the things here arent enough. i hope this works out for you. good luck.

For our type of hair it's easily damaged by heat(trust me i know) Try using the iron less, and just do a deep condition or hot oil treatement at least once a week but i usually wear my hair down

eat lots of vitamin e and protein. sometimes i like to punture a liquid vitamin e capsule and massage it into my scalp. i agree~use the iron less. (PS. i am a white person but i know what i am talking about.)

You might try going to a beauty college for some ideas. Many of the people there are very innovative. They still have passion for what they do and can spend a lot of time with you. Explain you situration to recptionest so she can set you up with the best person. Your best hair style is going to augment your facial features so I can't get a grasp without a visual.

Go to www.napptuarilty.com! The second thing I want to advise you to do is STOP putting those harsh chemicals (PERMS, TEXTURIZERS, ETC) in your hair! Black women need to realize that ALL of our hair is Beautiful NATURAL! For your thinning I'd suggest using products by "Organic Root Stimulator" I use the Olive Oil Moisterizer and The Carrot Oil Conditioner. Also Stay way from Hot Combs and Flat Iron...all those do is Falsify what your hair really is ...and it misguides others to think that your hair is straight! Give that mess up if you want healthy hair! If you treat your hair with respect it will GROW LONGER THAN YOU"VE EVER IMAGINED!

Good Luck Sister...

You say your hair is thin in the front? Do you have a high forehead? If so, I suggest a roller set to accentuate volume, also to get away from the high heat that flat irons offer. This way you can shape your hair from there if you like curls. You need to note your face shape, body shape, image that you want to give. If curls aren't your thing, maybe think about a cute layered haircut instead (Holly Berry). There's also straightening systems, of course if your hair is breaking now, NO chemical treatments! I suggest curls are the way to go and all you have to do is sit under a dryer with a wrap until dry. If you don't want to curl or flat iron it that's up to you, but remember if there's breakage, NO CHEMICALS! Look through some magazines with women that have your same face shape, take note of the style hair, and put your finger over their face, then if you still like the hairstyle without the face, by all means go for it! Good luck sweetie!

P.S. Get a Deep Conditioning treatment!!!! It makes an excellent start and your hair will thank you!
