I just got costody of my little cousin last night. I don't know what kind of hair supplies I should get for her hair. Can someone please help me. Shes 9 years old and has dry, frizzy hair. Someone told me not to use shampoo in her hair. Is that true?
She's been using the same shampoo as her mom. I know that there are different hair supplies for different hair types. I don't know what kind to get for her.
Please help me, I don't want to ruin this childs hair!!!!!!
Good hair supplies for an African American child?
First of all, a supportive hug for the new addition to your family.
To add to the information already given, please do not forget that if her hair is dry and frizzy, most likely she will need to have her hair moisturized everyday. Here are some suggestions for supplies:
Use light oils-such as olive oil or jojoba oil-to daily moisturize her hair and scalp.
Get a rat-tailed comb-to make parts in her hair (you'll want to make many parts to moisturize her hair and scalp properly).
Get a wide-toothed comb-to comb her hair.
Get a soft-padded comb-to brush her hair.
Get a satin scarf-to tie her hair down at night (you might have better luck getting a good piece of satin material at a sewing goods store or Walmart).
Remember to apply oil to her hair first, before combing it out, and then comb out the ends first, working towards the scalp (you don't want to be too harsh on her hair by combing from the roots out to the ends).
After combing out her hair and applying the oils, style her hair in about four braids in order to maintain the moisture during the day. You can use clips or scrunchies for decoration, but take them out at night when she sleeps. Please don't use rubber bands, because they may tangle in her hair.
One important thing would be to find a hairdresser that works on African-American hair. Did she have such a hairdresser prior to being in your custody?
Additional Resources:
I prefer Mizani or Dudley products for the hair when it comes to shampooing, conditioning. However, you have to get them from their licensed dealers.
I know that if you go on the website for Mizani, you might be able to find a hairdresser in your area that uses their products (therefore most likely having experience on African-American hair). Mizani is very finicky about who uses their products, you have to go to their specific training courses and be certified to use their products (that's why not every hairdresser has them).
The Dudley website seems to be experiencing some difficulties in providing that service. However, there is a corporate number on their website you can call if interested in finding out more information.
Just remember that this part will get easier with time.
All the best.

If you cant take her to the hair salon. Start using Biolage or Nioxin hair products, you should use shampoo though, but only good stuff. Biolage and Nioxin are kind of expensive though. You could try that organic olive oil stuff, it made my hair softer.

Oh my goodness! The things people say!
Yes, you can shampoo her hair jeez..
Don't be afraid, it's really easy actually %26amp; you do not have to use expensive products. Her dry, frizzy hair needs moisture plain %26amp; simple.
Go to a beauty supply store %26amp; buy little sample sizes of products first. That way you'll be able to see what's better for her without breaking the bank.
Try these:
if she has finer, "mixed" culture or curly hair -*Tressemme Moisture or Smooth %26amp; Silky Line
*Biosilk
Thick coarser hair - I'm a BIG FAN of Motions - it's a line in a yellow bottle with purple capping - Great great stuff!
--
Deep conditioning (and she will need it) try hair mayonnaise %26amp; olive or coconut oil.
You'll probably like to start her off with a deep condition, it will set everything off right %26amp; make it a little easier to maintain.
Also, it's a little harder to find these days but 911. That's the name, have lots of leave in conditioners that will keep the moisture in.
Good luck!

IF YOU WANT SOFT HAIR DO THIS:
I DO THIS TO MY HAIR IT MAKES IT SUPER SOFT:
YESSS I HAVE OVERDONE-COLOR-TREATED HAIR (REALLY DRY AND FRIZZY)!
go to wal mart and you can by "GARNIER FRUCTiS SLEEK%26amp;SHINE ANTI-FRIZZ SERUM" (it comes in a green round ball with a soap-like dispenser)
after you wash hair with the oh so silkening "Dove moisturinging shampoo and conditiner, towel dry hair is its still damp. rub a SMALL amount (size of a quarter) onto palms then into hair. then let it airdry until its FULLY dried.
after that you can straighten hair with a straighten iron by itself with no chemicals and it will come out AWESOME!
